Roberta Sandlan Obituary

Roberta “Bert” (Miller) Sandlan, age 73, passed from this world to the next on Sunday, February 18, 2024. Bert was born to Nathan and Eleanor (Gaffney) Miller on November 15, 1950, on her mother’s 32nd birthday. She grew up in Portage, WI, and graduated from Portage High School in 1968. She lived in Madison all her adult life and was a State of Wisconsin employee in various departments most of her career. In September 2004, Bert married her long-time love Daryl Sandlan on her family’s farm. Bert and Daryl were a loving and devoted couple who truly enjoyed each other’s company and the simple pleasures of life. They liked to eat out, take day trips, feed the birds, and spend time with family and friends. Bert also liked to play cards. During her working years, she could be found playing an evening game of Sheepshead with her colleagues. Bert was generous with her time and stayed busy after retirement by volunteering at Second Harvest Food Pantry, bell ringing for the Salvation Army, and going door-to-door for her preferred political party. She enjoyed spending many weekends over the course of her life with her dear cousins in Neshkoro. Her homemade chocolate pudding, coleslaw, meatballs, truffle, and chocolate cake (simply dubbed the “brown cake” by her great nieces and nephews who often requested it as their birthday cake) are something of family legend. She was talented at cross stitch. With painstaking detail and precision, she created and framed her cross-stitching works of art for her siblings, cousins, and their children. She was loyal and always available to help a friend. Bert is survived by her husband Daryl, sister Bonnie Manning, brothers Randy (Boni) and Allie Miller, nephew Nathan Manning, and nieces Honore Manning (Dave), Melissa Miller-Hayes (Chad), and Claudia Bavlnka (Joe). She delighted in her great nephews and nieces: Godson Ian and Alex Hayes and Charlotte, Honore, and Mac Bavlnka. Bert was preceded in death by her parents, brother Lou, and nephew Matthew Miller. A gathering to celebrate Bert will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday May 18, 2024 at the Kratz Funeral Home - Portage. The family would like to thank UW-Hospital and Middleton Village for caring for Bert these last months, as well as UW-ER staff for their compassion and kindness.
