Wilma Mary Bartels, age 96 years, died on Monday, February 20, 2012 at the Columbia County Health Care Center in Wyocena. She was born on July 13, 1915 in Briggsville to William and Fanny (Parrott) McMahon. Wilma graduated from Portage High School and on June 13, 1936 was united in marriage to Walter Bartels at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portage; he preceded her in death on November 17, 1985. She was a member of the Portage VFW Ladies Auxiliary # 1707 for over 50 years, was active in all the children's activities such as Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout leader for high school girls, member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Portage Senior Civic Club, Portage Boat Club and did active charity work at the nursing home, hospital, schools, church and the grapevine. Survivors include son - Walter (Susan) Bartels of Friendship; daughter - Peggy Lou Burress and friend - Bob Mielke of Minneapolis; daughter in law - Bev Bartels of Endeavor; 6 grandchildren - Angela Kirking (Dan Homick), Sarah (Mark) Zakrzewski, Christina (Scott) Huber, Jessica Bartels, Brianna (Shannon) Bartels Rohrbeck and Andrea (Mark) Bartels-Gaziano; 7 great grandchildren - Phoenix, Crystalyn, Lana, Alexander, Ella, Margaret and Wayne; brother - Lt. Col Patrick Burke (Francine) McMahon (ret.) of Texas; sister - Kathleen Grady of Baraboo and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son - Wayne on October 22, 2006, her parents, son in law - Lee Burress, sister - Shirley and two brothers - Harland and John. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father James Murphy officiating.
