Dr. William Robert Laing entered his heavenly home early Friday morning at the Columbia Health Care Center. He was born June 22, 1922 to William G. Laing and Emma (Alf) Laing in Berlin, Wisconsin. Bill graduated from Berlin High School in 1940. He attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, Mission House College (Lakeland College) in Plymouth, Wisconsin and graduated from Marquette School of Dentistry in 1948. Bill was in the Navy in World War II from 1944-1946 in the South Pacific. Doc married Virginia (Ginny) Zaske on January 26, 1950 in Portage. He sang with the Portage Barber shoppers. He was a charter member of the Portage Rotary Club, served as second President (was the youngest president at the time.) He was a life member of the Tri-County Dental Association and Wisconsin Dental Association. Bill served on the Portage Police and Fire Commission for 14 years. He was an avid sportsman- played softball and basketball, a member of the Portage Country Club (had a hole-in-one on his 79th birthday), a member of the Portage Curling Club (participated in 3 eight point ends.) Doc was an avid bowler. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served on various boards, sang in the choir for 60 years. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Virginia, two daughters; Christine (Morvin) Peck and Joanne (Ronald) Soyk; a grandson Andy Peck; sister-in-law Marjorie Zaske: special nephew Bill Bartlett and many other nieces and nephews. William is preceded in death by his parents; Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Laing, sister Ruth Maples; brother-in-laws Allen Bartlett and George Maples; his father and mother-in-law Mr. and Mrs. V.A. Zaske and brother-in-law Frank Zaske. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 13, 2016 in the St John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Portage, WI. Reverend Greg Hovland will be officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of service. The family wishes to thank the care givers on Willow Court at the Columbia Health Care Center for their exceptional and compassionate care. Also, Agrace Hospice for their services.
