Wayne Elmer Bornick, age 79 years of Portage, died on Thursday, July 5, 2012 at the Divine Savior Hospital in Portage. He was born on March 17, 1933, in Portage, to Elmer and Mildred (MacMurtrie) Bornick. He married the love of his life, Sherry Slinger in Cambria on August 29, 1959. Wayne attended Portage schools before joining the US Navy serving during the Korean War. Following his service he attended Milwaukee School of Barbering. He owned and operated Wayne's Barbershop for 45 years sharing his "expert advice". He was confirmed as a Methodist and then transferred after marriage to the Portage Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. Over the years he was active in many community club organizations, an athletic sponsor for Portage High School, a member of the American Legion Post # 47 and VFW Post # 1707. Wayne also enjoyed fishing, photography, genealogy, camping, traveling throughout the US and Europe, enjoying the Badgers, Brewers and Packers, attending Rose Bowl games, attending Navy reunions and being a camp host at Mirror Lake State Park for several years. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Sherry of Portage; 2 Children - Marcie Bornick-Stumpf of Cambria and Mark Bornick of Portage; 5 Grandchildren - Kami Bornick, Taylor (Chris) Boling, MacKenzie Bornick, Brooke Stumpf and Hunter Stumpf; 1 Great Grandchild - Skylynn Boling; 2 Brothers - Dale (Amy) Bornick of Whitewater and Gary (Mary) Bornick of Milton; Sister in law - Eleanor (David) Layton of Neveda and Jeannette Jones of Portage; Brother in law - Philip Slinger of Green Bay as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister - Nancy Bornick and a granddaughter - Jazmyn Hope Stumpf. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Portage Presbyterian Church with Rev. David Hankins officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Portage. Friends may call at the Picha Funeral Home, Portage on Tuesday from 4 - 7 PM and at the church on Wednesday from 10 AM until 11 AM.
