Phillip Owen Smith, age 80 years, died on Monday, July 2, 2012 at the VA Medical Center in Tomah. He was born on July 1, 1932 in Portage to Edward and Hilda (Konkel) Smith. Phillip has lived in Rio for many years where he worked in the Ag Industry, various canning factories and as a technician for the Wisconsin State DOT. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping and garage sales. Phillip had also served in the US Army during the Korean War. Survivors include two sons - Mike (Lisa) Smith of Fall River and Doug (Debbie) Smith of Pardeeville; 4 grandchildren - Jake, Sidney, Will and Shelby; brother - Russell (Jeanette) Smith of Portage; sister - Shirley (Duane) Kraemer of College Station, TX and other relatives and friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by 3 brothers - Orlyn, Wallace and George and a sister - Pearl Smith. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 6, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the St. John's Lutheran Church, Portage with Rev. Alan Boeck officiating. Burial along with military rites by the Portage area veterans will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 9:30 AM until 11AM.
