PORTAGE, WI -- Margaret Mary Irwin, 91, passed away peacefully at the Columbia County Health Care Center in Wyocena, WI on Wednesday, December 17, 2014. Margaret Mary was born in Portage, Wisconsin on March 12, 1923 to Charles & Elizabeth (Devine) Dalton. Margaret Mary lived the majority of her years in Portage. On May 1, 1946, Margaret Mary married Robert Irwin in Pardeeville, WI. They lived in Portage and raised a family of six children. Margaret Mary, in her lifetime, worked for Hercules Powder Company (Badger Ordinance), Mac's cafe in Baraboo, Her Uncle George Devine's realty office in Portage and ultimately retired from the Columbia County Courthouse as a receptionist in 1990. Margaret Mary was a member of the Columbia County Historical Society and an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portage for many years. She strived and continued to maintain an active and independent lifestyle. With the help of her loving niece, Mary Ellen, Margaret Mary was able to remain in her own home until July 2014. Margaret Mary is survived by her sister, Loretta (Donald) Zuther of Portage; six children, Mary (Mike) Collins of Richland Center; Marcia (Dave - deceased November 2014) Mielke of Shawnee, Kansas; Robert Irwin, Menomonie; William (Audrey) Irwin, Acton, California; Kevin (Sandy) Irwin, Eau Claire and Karen (Greg) Engel, Golden, Colorado. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, nine grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and her faithful companion Morris, her cat. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers Richard and Joseph Dalton. Margaret Mary enjoyed all of her longtime neighbors on West Carroll Street and her recent neighbors at "Our House" Assisted Living in Portage. Thank you to the staff at Our House who cared for Margaret Mary, to Divine Savior EMS, Emergency Room and hospital staff who attended to Margaret Mary, and a final "Thank You" to the staff at the Columbia Health Care Center in Wyocena who cared for Margaret Mary on the path to her final home in heaven. A Memorial Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2014 in St. Mary's of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Portage, WI. Father Gary Krahenbuhl will be officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
