Obituary

Leo Richard Martin, age 94 years, of Portage died on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at the VA Hospital in Madison. He was born on October 31, 1916 in the Town of Marcellon, Columbia County, WI to Edward and Mary (Leverence) Martin. Leo was united in marriage to Phyllis Raimer on December 23, 1939 in Dubuque, Iowa. He served in the United States Army from July 1943 until discharge in February 1946. During that time he served in China, Burma and India serving his full army time without a furlough. He worked at Badger Ordinance, Pardeeville Scoreboard, member of WI General Laborers Union # 464 and worked for many companies in Madison including Findorff, Madsen Construction Company and Shappert Engineering retiring in 1981. Leo also farmed the "family farm" on weekends with his brothers and sister since the early 1950's. Throughout his retirement, he made daily trips to his beloved farm and back with his dog. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, dogs and baseball, being an avid baseball player pitching for many local teams, he was inducted into the Portage Fast Pitch Hall of Fame in 2000. He was also a member of the Portage American Legion and VFW Post # 1707. Survivors include his loving Wife of 71 years, Phyllis of Portage; 4 Children - Barbara (Jerome) Peterson of Pardeeville, Linda (Larry) Tessman of Portage, Russell Martin of Portage and Ronald Martin of Pardeeville; 8 Grandchildren - Jill Peterson, Brenda Price, Richard (Kim) Peterson, Ryan Peterson, Kelly (Richard) Brenner, Michael Tessman, Paige Martin and Julie Martin; 6 Great Grandchildren - Emily Price, Courtney Peterson, Brooke Peterson, Lakota Brenner, Allyson Brenner and Jack Brenner; and a Sister in law - Rosemary Martin of Portage. He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers - Edward, Jack, George, Clarence and Bobby Martin, sister - Freeda Barry and a Grandson - Nathan Tessman on 2000. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Picha Funeral Home, Portage with Rev. Dick Inglett officiating. Burial with military rites by the Portage Area Veteran's will be held at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Portage. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:30 AM until 11 AM.
