Obituary

LaMay Corine Nybroten October 20, 1939 – April 30, 2024 LaMay Corine Nybroten (Sexe) of Stoughton went to be with the Lord on April 30, 2024. LaMay was born October 20, 1939, to Leonard and Adella (Saed) Sexe of rural Ettrick. She was baptized and confirmed at Faith Lutheran Church in rural Ettrick, WI. LaMay graduated from Blair High School in 1957 and received a BA degree in Elementary Education from Luther College in 1961. LaMay married Rev. Ronald Nybroten on August 10th, 1963, at Faith Lutheran Church. Ron and LaMay were blessed with over 60 years of marriage. LaMay's passions were serving her Lord's church, loving her family and friends, and the education of children. Together, LaMay and Ronald served churches in Hogeland (Montana), Westby (Wisconsin), and New Glarus (Wisconsin), the latter for nearly 30 years. In retirement years, LaMay was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where she was instrumental in starting the Advent By Candlelight women's event along with her Bible Study Group (which quickly became her best friend group). Her teaching career began in Circle Pines (Centennial), MN, and continued when the Nybrotens took their first call to serve in Hogeland, MT. The majority of LaMay's teaching years were spent as a Reading Specialist and Title 1 teacher for the New Glarus School District. The community of New Glarus and the friendships made there will forever hold a special place in the Nybroten family. LaMay's love of children and her patient dedication to the importance of reading inspired her to achieve a MA in Elementary Education from Viterbo University and her Reading Specialist license from the State of Wisconsin. She was a consummate reader of the Bible and history. LaMay and Ronald were blessed with many travels that included The Holy Land, Jordan, Greece/Turkey, Europe, and the vast majority of the US (visiting all of the National Parks along the way!). A highlight was visiting her family on the family homestead on the fjord in Sekse, Norway. Her patience, love. and shining smile were shared with all and will be greatly missed. LaMay is survived by her loving husband, Ronald, her three sons and daughter-in-laws, Nathan and Kathleen (Hoekman), Tim and Chandra (Philo), Phil and Megan (Totel). Five grandchildren, Hannah, Joshua, Jenna, Noah, and Abigail. She is also survived by a brother, Maynard Saxe, and sisters-in-law, Ardis Sexe, Charlene Saxe, and Dorothea Lind and nieces and nephews. LaMay is preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Aldred Sexe, LaVern Saxe, an infant brother, a brother-in-law, Rev. Richard Lind, and sister-in-law, Florence Sexe. The family would like to especially thank the following for their loving care and support: LaMay's Bible Study group (best friends)—Sally Bertelson, Kris Ceder, Rona Lukalewski, Carrie Odden, her church-St. John's Lutheran, Kettle Park Senior Living, and St. Croix Hospice. Services for LaMay will be held on Sunday, May 19th at 3:00 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Oregon, WI. Rev. Ellen Stelzle will be officiating. Visitation at the church will be held directly preceding the funeral service beginning at 2:00 p.m. Services will also be held on Monday, May 20th at 11:00 a.m. at North Beaver Creek Faith Lutheran Church in rural Ettrick, WI. Rev. Libby Howe officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Committal will follow in the Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church, Oregon or to North Beaver Creek Faith Lutheran Church, Ettrick. The Family would like to thank Pastor Ellen and the Congregation of St. John's Lutheran for their care, compassion and support given to the family.
