Obituary

Jessie Margaret (McClyman) Hays, age 90 years, of Portage, died on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at the Wausau Manor, Wausau. She was born on March 31, 1919 to Frank H. McClyman and Frona M. Smith in the town of New Chester, Adams County, Wisconsin. Following the death of her mother in May 1919, she was cared for by her grandmother on the family farm along with her father and two brothers. At the age of six when her grandmother died, she came to live with her Aunt Jessie and Uncle Fred Swannell in Portage. On September 10, 1938 she was married to Wallace A. Hays at the Methodist Church in Portage, he preceded her in death in 1999. Before her marriage, she worked at the F. W. Woolworth store and in the office of Dr. Earl Doersch in Portage. In 1942, she and her husband went out to California to work for the war effort at Consolidated Aircraft Corporation in San Diego. They returned in October, 1944 to make their home in Portage. In 1960 she worked at Divine Savior Hospital in the medical records department until 1970. Jessie was a member of the Portage United Methodist Church and the Pansy Rebekah Lodge. Survivors include three children - Diane (Wayne) Thomas of Summerville, FL, Lanny (Maria) Hays of Fort Worth, TX and Linda (Darwin) Gregerson of Rothschild, WI; 8 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and her aunt and uncle, who raised her. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 11:00 AM the Portage United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom Countryman officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at the Silver Lake Cemetery, Portage. Friends may call at the Picha Funeral Home, Portage on Tuesday from 5 - 7 PM and at the church on Wednesday from 10 AM until 11 AM.
