James I. Gerstad, age 64 years, of Portage went to Heaven to be with his family and friends on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at the Columbia Health Care Center in Wyocena. James was born on September 1, 1947 and lived in Briggsville for his childhood and part of his adult life with his foster mother and good friend, Esther House, and foster brothers, Ken and Joe. He did a variety of jobs in his life, but ended his working days at Northwoods, Inc., where he enjoyed the staff and the coworkers that he formed relationships with there. James also loved his services where he could go and partake in community activities with his trainers.  James lived his later adult life in a supported apartment through The Arc Greater Columbia County. He spent many years visiting Arlette Breneman daily and going out and about with Robin Michael and staff at the apartment. Robin spoiled James throughout the years and James was always glad to hear from her and spend time with her even after he moved out of the apartment. When James became ill, he received great service from Care Wisconsin, Columbus Rehabilitation Center, Our House in Portage, and Columbia Health Care Center in Wyocena. James also was a member at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Portage where he had many friends that he enjoyed spending time with including Chris and Steven Collins.  James enjoyed going for car rides, going to special events in the community, collecting trains, wildlife and bird watching, canning vegetables and making jam, bike riding, and spending time with his good friends. James always had a great story to tell, had a great sense of humor, and a kind heart. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.  A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 15, 2012 at 3:00 PM at the Greenwood Cemetery, Town of Lewiston with Pastor Christian Ronalds officiating.
