Jack Lewis Carrington, age 87 years, died peacefully in his son's arms at the Heritage House in Portage on Monday, March 24, 2014. He was born in Terre Haute, IN on September 29, 1926 to George "Dewey" and Rowena (Pugh) Carrington. Jack grew up on the northside of Chicago and proudly served in the United States Navy from 1942 until 1946 in the Pacific Theater. Upon his return to Chicago is where he met "his one true love" and was united in marriage to Elizabeth "Betty" Schwanz on September 6, 1946. He moved to Portage in 1949 and was employed by Hoffmans Shoe Repair, Goodland-McGanns Furniture, Portage Co-op Creamery and Zinke Dray Line until he found his life's trade, re-upholstering with Magilligans in Madison until he went into business for himself in Portage known as Jacks Upholstery. He was a former member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Portage where he and Betty were in the Luther League Youth Leaders for 13 years, active as an usher and whenever and wherever he was needed. At present Jack was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Portage with Rev. Alan Boeck as his shepherd. He is survived by his "Love", Elizabeth "Betty" Carrington of Portage, son, Russell (Jackie) Carrington of Pardeeville, daughter, Linda (Steven) Gray-Dittman of Portage, 6 grandchildren, Channing Mills, Sara Drews, Jack Carrington & Deb Burelison, Jeff (Jean) Carrington, Tia Gray and Keven (Julie) Gray, several great grandchildren and a great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Betty Overton, brother, George Carrington JR. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 1:30 PM at the St. John's Lutheran Church, Portage with Rev. Alan Boeck officiating. Military rites by the Portage Area Veterans will follow the service. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from Noon until 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Columbia County Humane Society or St. John's Lutheran Church.
