Obituary

Harold Otto Hill, 96, of Portage died Sunday, November 10, 2013 at Azura Memory Care in Monroe, Wisconsin.   He was born September 27, 1917, in Ladoga, Wisconsin to Otto & Grace Hill. At the age of two Harold moved to the farm in Fort Winnebago township. He attended Dates Mill School through 8th grade and freshman year of high school in Portage, Wisconsin. Harold remained on the farm until he was united in marriage to Lorraine Russell on June 29, 1946, at the Portage Methodist Church parsonage.   Harold's employment included Bob Wilcox's garage and working as a milk hauler for North Marcellon Cheese Factory. His employment was interrupted by an enlistment in the 32nd Division, 128th Infantry, Wisconsin National Guard that led to an induction into the United States Army, 32nd Division - 732D Ordinance (Light Maintenance) Company. Harold achieved a rank of TEC-4 Sergeant and was stationed in New Guinea, southern Philippines, Luzon and also spent time in Australia.   Harold's continued employment after World War II included Hyland Garage, Portage, Badger Ordinance Ammunition Plant in the Fire Department, Montgomery Wards service department, Portage, part-time work on his own as a radio and T.V. repairman, Gisholt Machine Company, Oscar Mayer and he retired from Ohio Medical (Ohmeda/GE) in Madison. After a brief stint of retirement, Harold went on to be a part-time driver for Interstate Auto Auction in Portage. Harold also became an accomplished wood worker after his retirement, creating heirloom pieces for family and friends. He and Lorraine also enjoyed traveling all of the continental United States during their lifetime and an extended trip to Canada after retirement.   Survivors include his daughter, Corrine (Russell) Meier of Monroe, daughter-in-law, Barbara Hill of Portage, three grandchildren, Joshua Meier (Zoe), Melissa (Benjamin) Borke and Michelle Meier all of Monroe; two brothers-in-law, Stuart (Rosemary) Russell of Oxford, and Alfred (JoAnn) Russell of Fitchburg; and one sister-in-law, Judith Girling of Wyocena. Harold is also survived by his nieces and nephews and other extended family. Harold was preceded in death by his wife Lorraine on Sept. 28, 2011, son Donald on March 16, 2011, an infant son Jeffrey and his parents; sister, Thelma and brother, Sheldon.   Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Portage United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom Countryman officiating. Burial with military rites by the Portage area veterans will follow at the Silver Lake Cemetery in Portage. Friends may call at the Picha Funeral Home, Portage on Wednesday from 4 - 7 pm and at the church on Thursday from 10:00 am until 11 am. Service Details. Visitation
