Evelyn May Closs, age 93 years, of Portage, died on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at the Divine Savior Hospital in Portage. She was born on May 29, 1916 in Portage to Walter and Mabel (Schultz) Nitz. Evelyn worked for many years at the Weyenburg Shoe Factory. She had been married to Glen Smith and later to John Closs. Evelyn was a lifetime member of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Portage, member of Railroad Women's Club and spent her winters in Rockford and Texas for 30 years. Survivors include her Son - Douglas (Margery) Smith of Rockford, IL; a Step-daughter - Beverly Luttrell of Dallas, TX; 3 Grandchildren - Dr. Glen (Terri) Smith of Dickinson, TX, Dr. Alice (James) Stuhlmacher of Wheaton, IL and Linda (James Chamings) Smith of Hillsboro, OR; 2 Great Grandchildren - Michelle and Anna Stuhlmacher; and 1 Sister - Larryne Crawford of Portage. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, 2 sisters - Florence Doughty and Marueriete Harmon and a brother - Earl Nitz. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Portage at 11:00 AM with Rev. Vicki Warren officiating.
