Donald J
Plier
April 27, 1942 – March 17, 2025
Don Plier passed away March 17, 2025 at Aspirus Divine Savior Hospital in Portage, Wisconsin.
He was born in Oconto, Wisconsin to James and Virginia (Ellsworth) Plier on April 27, 1942.
He was loved by many who have gone before and many who are still living.
Don became a passionate student of health and wellness and particularly appreciated the connection between mind, body and spirit. He was an early adaptor to the concept of living green. He was a handy man who loved building, collecting, repairing and repurposing. At the time of his death, he was expecting delivery of a colony of bees for his hives.
Don spent his formative years on Congress Street in Oconto, where he was active in the Boy Scouts and the First Presbyterian Church. Summers brought canoeing, water skiing and, later, sailing on Crooked Lake. Fall and winter visits there involved deer and bear hunting.
During his high school years, Don excelled in state-level forensic competitions and worked at the A&P grocery store. He had an affinity for electronics and became a licensed ham radio operator. Early piano lessons and playing coronet in band had built a solid foundation in music. Don was able to enjoy playing guitar, especially rock 'n roll, for the rest of his life. He was a natural entertainer at family get-togethers, high school reunions and local gigs.
At Carroll College Don met the love of his life, Julia Bersie, whom he married in 1965. Their early years together in Chicago, where Don got his law degree and sold real estate, yielded stories of experiencing great musicians including Bob Dylan and The Band. He would later practice law as a member of the Wisconsin Bar.
At the inception of the computer age, Don and Julie found they were able to work together in IT, contributing software development and network administration for organizations in the greater Madison area. Later in life, he was able to enjoy travel with Julie.
Don is survived by his wife, Julie, brother Douglas (Beth) Plier of Horicon and sister Deborah (Robert) Tenner of Minneapolis. He is also survived by friends Jim Clark, Jon McCall, Daryl and Barbara Sullivan, along with cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, nephew Russell Little and several cousins.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
