Donald William Holmes, age 93 years, of Portage, died on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at the Divine Savior Hospital in Portage. He was born on September 27, 1916 in Portage to William and Gertrude (Monteufel) Holmes. Donald has lived in Portage all his life where he graduated from Portage High School. On April 5, 1948 he was united in marriage to Helen Esser at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portage; she preceded him in death on January 12, 1995. Together they owned and operated the Holmes Grocery Store in Portage from 1949 - 1981. He was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Survivors include Daughter - Linda (Ronald) Wendt of Portage, 1 Grandson - Neil (Nicole) Wendt of Dalton, 2 Great Grandchildren - Taylor and Payton and a Sister - Helen Mitchell of Portage. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and a sister - Ruth Lucas. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at 10:30 AM at the St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father James Murphy officiating. Burial will follow at the Silver Lake Cemetery, Portage.
