Dean L. Hoel, 79, passed away on March 26, 2026, in Madison, WI. Born on July 13, 1946, in Portage, Wisconsin, Dean was a cherished member of his community and a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Dean dedicated over 40 years to working as an engineer for the railroad, a career filled with countless stories of crossings and memorable incidents that he loved to share.

His passion for life extended beyond his profession into his love for the outdoors. An avid fisherman, hunter, and woodcutter, Dean also enjoyed spending time on his John Deere Tractor and exploring the outdoors with his beloved dog, Bailey, who was his close companion, especially in his later years. His highlight for many years was when he traveled to South Dakota with his "Hunting Posse."

Dean's resilience and positive spirit were evident as he faced health challenges over the last seven years with a smile and without complaint. His ability to light up a room remained undiminished by his struggles. A generous individual, Dean devoted much of his time to the Rio Food Pantry, helping those in need when he was able.

He is survived by his sons, Dean (Jeanine) Hoel Jr. and Tyler (Sue) Hoel; granddaughters, Heather (Matt) Weatherwax, Kimberly (Tom) Kehoe, and Sadie Hoel; five greatgrandchildren, Makensey, Kayden, Addison, Vada, and Hunter; and his sister-in-law, Linda Hoel and nephews; Bryan and Darrin. Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Mildred Hoel, his brother Dennis Hoel, and his grandparents.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dean's special friends and care team, including Sheddy, Penny, Bill, Jeana, Charlie, Jim, and the dedicated UW Doctors, Dr. Deering and Dr. McCulloch, for their support and care.

A celebration of Dean's life will be held at Sarbackers Bar, 1402 W. Wisconsin Street, Portage, Wisconsin on April 18 from 1-5.
