Obituary

Clyde Leo Hoffer age 98 of Portage, WI died on Sunday, June 18, 2017 in King Veterans Home in King, WI. Clyde was born in Portage on December 24, 1918 to Louis and Eva (Willett) Hoffer. Clyde attended Portage Schools, but found life more rewarding by joining the Army. On March of 1942 he enlisted in the US Army entering in Fort Sheridan Illinois. serving his country well. He became a Staff Sargent, mortar crewman as a combat infantryman, accomplished sniper. Clyde served in Rhineland, Northern France and Central Europe. He was awarded a Good Conduct Metal, EAME Theater Ribbons, American Theater Ribbon and three Bronze Service Stars. Clyde L Hoffer, Staff Sergeant Company G 374th infantry was honorable discharged on 6 November 1945. Clyde came home and married Betty Mitchell on December 12, 1945 in Wisconsin Dells, WI he worked at the Weyenberg shoe factory for 40 years. Clyde enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, trapping, fishing. "POP" is survived by his daughter Nancy (Steven) Nelson Pleasant Prairie, WI; grandson Daniel Hinickle, great granddaughters Samantha and Grace Hinickle; Son Larry (Carole) Hoffer of Portage, WI; grandchildren Sarah Hoffer, Lori (Matthew) Barthel, Pamela (Michael) Charles. 9 great grandchildren; Chase, Colin and Elizabeth Barthel, Bradley, Joseph, Andrew and Katherine Charles. Clyde was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty, Identical twin brother Clifford and a brother Melvin. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at the Kratz Funeral Home in Portage (www.kratzfuneralhome.com) Rev. Tom Countryman will be officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Portage, WI with the Portage Area Veterans Honor Guard performing military rites. Memorials may be given in Clyde's name to Disabled American Veterans.
