Bernadine Anne Statz , age 100 years of Portage, died on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at Heritage House in Portage. She was born on August 8, 1910 in Colby, WI to Nicholas and Anna (Sellung) Stockhausen. Bernadine graduated 8th grade from St. Joseph Catholic School in Menomonie, WI. After the family moved to Wauwatosa, she worked for the telephone company and attended vocational school at night. Bernadine was united in marriage to Leonard Statz on August 8, 1931 at the St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Wauwatosa, and continued to live there until moving to Portage in 1938. They farmed in the Town of Caledonia until his death on October 16, 1981, shortly after celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. She moved to the (Civic League) Zona Gale House in Portage in 1984 and became a resident of Deer Run Apartments from 1992 until the recent past. She was active in her community, serving as President of the Caledonia Neighborhood Club, was a member of K of C Columbian Ladies, St. Mary's Alter Society and a leader of the Caledonia Victory 4-H. She also was a member of Portage Senior Citizens, Wauona Women's Club and Card Club. She set her alarm clock for early Sunday morning so she could participate in the TV Mass from the Apostolate To The Handicapped with Fr. Campion presiding. She was always optimistic, valued education and reading, but family was her treasure. She was well loved as wife, mom, grandma, or granny and friend. Survivors include 1 Son - William (Kathy) Statz of Pardeeville; 4 Daughters - Barbara (LeRoy) Ode of St. Frances, Carol McCann of Eau Claire, Julie Lansing of Plover and Marjorie (Richard) Craemer of Oconomowoc; 19 Grandchildren; 32 Great Grandchildren; 3 Sisters in Law - Helen Stockhausen of Milwaukee, Bernice Stockhausen of Finland, MN and Katherine Statz of Baraboo; cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a Son - Henry and his wife, Phyllis Statz, 2 Sons in law - Richard Lansing and Thomas McCann, 5 Brothers - Antone, Ervin, Gerry, Edward and John, and 3 Sisters - Christine Brossman, Eleanore DeLoughery and Genevieve Orth. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 11 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Portage with Father Jim Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Portage. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9:30 until 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ronald McDonald House of Marshfield, Apostolate to the Handicapped or the charity of one's choice.
