Barbara Louise Messer, age 74 years, of Portage died on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison. She was born on September 11, 1936 in Baraboo to George and Minnie (Neuman) Peetz. Barbara was united in marriage to Donald Messer on June 16, 1956 at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Portage; he preceded her in death on February 14, 2004. She has lived in Portage most of her life where she worked at Hoppe & Miller CPA, United Parcel Service, Droste Trucking, Klemm Trucking, Blystone Towing, Cascade Mountain and Piggly Wiggly. Barbara was a member of the Portage United Methodist Church and the Baraboo Golden K Kiwanis Club. She had helped her husband on the farm and enjoyed fishing, card playing, bowling and polka dancing. Survivors include 4 Sons - Kenneth (Trina) of Briggsville, Larry (Cindy) of Portage, Ronald (Jamie) of Portage and Russell (Tara) of Portage; 7 Grandsons - Justin, Ryan, Adam, Lucas, Jesse, Brady and Michael; 1 Granddaughter - Meghan; 2 Step-Grandchildren - Jade and Justine Sprecher; 1 Great Grandson - Blake; 1 Brother - Duane (Debbie) Peetz of Sacramento, CA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at 1:30 PM at the Portage United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom Countryman officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Portage. Friends may call at the Picha Funeral Home, Portage on Monday from 4 - 7 PM and at the church on Tuesday from Noon until 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, Diabetes Association or the Portage United Methodist Church.
